Canaanland, the home of Winners’ Chapel and Covenant University, is a hallowed ground. Thus, when some bandits attacked the place on 30 January 2008, not a few thought they could be aliens from outer space!
However, developments have shown that the bandits are humans with blood running in their veins afterall. Men of the Police Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Adeniji-Adele, recently arrested three of the suspects.
They are 35-year-old Oladipupo Popoola of 21 Ipamesan area of Sango Otta, Ogun State, who is an indigene of Erin Ijesha in Osun State. A married man who has a three-year old baby girl, Oladipupo, according to the police, is a land agent at Iyana-Ipaja.
Another suspect, Fatai Onipede, 30, is a native of Owu, Abeokuta and member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers at Ifo, Ogun State. He is married and has two children, a three-year-old boy and a four-month-old girl.
Adetutu Akilo, 30, the third suspect, claims to be one of the sons of a Baale in Sango Otta. He attended St. Peter’s Primary School, Otta and Sango High School, but dropped out in 1996.
According to Mr. Kefas Gadzama, Commissioner of Police in charge of the Federal special squad at Adeniji Adele, Lagos: “These suspects connived with other bandits to rob the banks at Canaanland. They monitored the entire Canaanland and called their accomplices to come and strike. We have their confessional statements.”
After the operation, Across Nigeria gathered, they held a lavish party, with a popular musician on the bandstand.
The total haul of the robbers in their raids on United Bank for Africa, Covenant Micro Finance, Spring Bank and Oceanic Bank, all within Canaanland, was N38.4 million.
The suspects have pledged their cooperation to enable the police nab their colleagues who are believed to be on the run in Cotonou.
