PORT HARCOURT/ Kidnapped From Church
June 09, 2008 12:28, 396 views
Joy can turn to sadness. And sometimes, that happens very quickly. That was the way it has been for Godwin Ekeowe, recently appointed Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government. A few hours after the announcement of his appointment, unknown gunmen stormed the Dome Family Church in Port Harcourt, and in broad daylight, abducted Augustina, Ekeowe’s wife. As at the time of going to the press, her whereabouts remained unknown. There had also not been any claim of responsibility by any of the militant groups operating in the region.
The incident, however, is being blamed on politicians in Bayelsa State, who allegedly want to stop Ekeowe from being sworn in by Governor Timipre Sylva. Since the re-election of Governor Sylva, various political camps have been propping candidates for the plum position that Ekeowe got.
The kidnap of Mrs. Ekeowe is the latest in the state, which has a dubiously rich history of abductions. Over past few months, top politicians have had their relatives kidnapped, usually for ransom, by militants claiming to be fighting against perceived marginalisation of the Niger Delta.
