LAGOS/ Fuel Adulterators In EFCC Net

August 11, 2008 11:15, 273 views

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested three persons in Apapa, Lagos for allegedly stealing and adulterating large quantities of petrol, diesel and kerosene. They were caught in the act of mixing the products with a blue powdery substance on 24 July at Berger area in Apapa, Lagos.

“We acted on a tip-off from members of the public living in the area. During the search, three of the suspects, Collins Okofu, Frederick Madughu and Tosa Ali, were arrested. Others are still at large,” an EFCC operative told Across Nigeria.

The anti-graft agency’s investigations revealed that the suspects loaded diesel stolen from Zenon Oil Company Ltd, Apapa, while the kerosene and petrol were loaded from an unspecified depot.

In a confessional statement, one of the suspects, Okofu said: “I was once a businessman dealing in lady’s hair attachments in Wuse, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory. I ran into problems when the former Minister of the FCT demolished my shop.

“I relocated to Lagos where a group of friends introduced me to the business of oil adulteration. A full tank load of diesel costs N3 million but my commission is just 10 per cent of the illegal proceeds,” he disclosed.

Investigations revealed that Okofu was the leader of a gang of oil pilferers and adulterators, with connections spanning the 36 states and the FCT. The suspects are still cooling their heels in EFCC custody.
