Poor Parenting Is Responsible

May 11, 2008 12:47, 474 views

Ralph Ibeazor, acting Oyo State Police Commissioner, blames parents for involvement of undergraduates in armed robbery in this interview with GBENRO ADESINAQ: How prevalent is the involvement of undergraduates in armed robbery?

A: Two weeks ago, we arrested two student robbers. Again, this week, we have arrested at least five student robbers. The last batch of the student robbers we arrested claimed to be students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan. So, if you examine this trend, you will agree with me that students are really going into armed robbery and this is very bad for our society and we must do everything possible to discourage or stop it.

Q: What is responsible?

A: The problem is that most of these students are now moving with bad people in the society. Cultism is also responsible for this development. Most of these students start with cultism and from there, they will start handling guns. Once you start handling guns, you become hard and start thinking of using weapons for robbery. Again, foreign films which are very violent are not helping our society. When they watch violent films, they also want to act it and in the process, they go into crime. It will be very nice if the government could help censor films that children have access to. Bad films or films that can corrupt our children should not be shown.

Q: How do you think we can stop students going into robbery?

A: Here, we think of the parents. You have to know the type of the child you have. You have to monitor your children well in school. You do not leave that responsibility to the school authorities alone. They cannot do it alone. Parents should not forget that institutions of higher learning are not like secondary schools. Here, students can do whatever they like but if parents come around to check on their children, they will be careful and will not want to do what their parents don’t want. With this, we will have better children in schools. So, the parents must play a very big role. They must learn to ask questions about their children. They must try to find out the kind of company their children keep.

Q: Are you saying that parents are not doing enough?

A: Exactly! They are not even monitoring their children until when they are in trouble. It is when the children are arrested that their parents will start coming and trying to free them from the crimes, which eventually they realise was committed by their children.

Q: Any example of this situation?

A: About three or four years ago, I was in Ogbomosho. I was in Chief Adewusi’s house. All of a sudden, I received a phone call that my cousin was involved in cultism and he was macheted. I could not believe it. When I phoned the father to tell him what happened, the father could not believe it. He said it could not be his son. But the father later discovered that his son was a cultist. When the father queried him, he denied. He told the father that he was running for the presidency of the students’ union. But the truth was that he and another boy from a rival cult group were fighting over a girl and the friends of his rival overpowered him and almost killed him. Some parents do not know what their children do when they are in institutions of higher learning.

Q: Does your command have a campus surveillance unit?

A: Yes, our CIB is everywhere. Some of them are even students of institutions of higher learning. The SSS too are also there trying to know what students are doing.
