‘We’ll Clean Up NURTW’—Hamman
June 29, 2009 10:36, 536 views
Alhaji Gidado Hamman, National Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, spoke to journalists on how to rid the union of partisan politics. GBENRO ADESINA was there.
Q: There are crises in Oyo, Ogun and Ondo states. When will they end?
A: Thank to God for everything. NURTW is 31 years now. Why are we witnessing all these types of problems only in the west? This problem is not in the North, East or South South, it is only in the South West. Maybe this is happening in the South West because there is too much money. I beg you to have a change of attitude. You need to re-orientate yourself. I had, at one time or the other, told the police that anybody who is a member of NURTW and takes laws into his hands should be dealt with like a criminal. Anybody that works against our constitution will be dealt with. Immediately after our National Executive Council meeting, we will organise a seminar in the western states and invite all the branch chairmen. I want to say that it is only an illiterate person that gets involved in thuggery. Any educated person will not be a thug. I am imploring our members to be educated and equally ensure that their children are educated.
Q: Your members, especially in the South West, are now tools in the hands of politicians who use them for selfish ends?
A: The constitution allows anybody who wants to belong to a political party to do that in his or her own capacity and not to drag our union into it. Any of our members who wants to join politics should resign or ask for a leave of absence. We have been having this problem in the west and it is time that we took action against it. I feel bad at what is happening now. There is no aspect of our constitution that says that any of our members can use whip, let alone dangerous weapons on anybody or on themselves. In the olden days, whenever politicians needed thugs, they went to motor parks and got any number they wanted. Now, we are going to write the police that whenever political wranglings arise, if anyone is caught and the person pretends to be a member of NURTW, his membership card should be requested. If such a person produces a membership card, we will automatically expel him or her. We have also asked the state to do membership audit because we want to know our membership strength. We will establish a book that once it says a person is a member and he commits any crime, we will get him through his file and serial number, apprehend him and hand him over to the police. That is why the card is renewed every year. The membership of anybody found wanting will not be renewed. I am assuring you that we will use all means to take NURTW out of politics. The problem in Ekiti, Ogun and Ondo is political too.
Q: How do you react to the state governments giving commercial vehicles to NURTW and requesting them for use during crises?
A: If a government is giving out vehicles on that ground, the union should not accept it. They should turn it down. They should not allow themselves to be used by politicians because they will use them and dump them. This we will also discuss at the appropriate meeting.
