‘Yar’Adua Is A Big Failure’—Dr. Radda
June 22, 2009 16:24, 1,146 views
Dr. Sadiq Isah Radda, Katsina-born Sociologist, is the Dean, Faculty of Social and Management Science, Bayero University, Kano. In this interview with Mmeribeh Madu, he contended that President Umaru Yar’Adua, his former teacher and brother and in-law, is a big failure as Nigeria’s president.
Q: Many think that President Umaru Yar’ Adua has not achieved much as president of Nigeria. What is your view?
A: The political problems facing Umaru Musa Yar’Adua are not unexpected. This is because he was not prepared for the job and he is not fit for it, too. Additionally, he lacks the exposure, firmness and sagacity to govern Nigeria . Worst of all, he lacks legitimacy and people rocked by the crisis of legitimacy will always under-achieve. He was imposed on Nigerians and we are paying the price of that imposition. I doubt if Yar’Adua has shown any leadership in the past two years. What we have is a man full of rhetorics and too many statements of intentions. Again, he can’t lead because he knows, just like we all know, that he is not the people’s president. I can hardly see Yar’Adua’s achievements. To me, he came, he saw and has failed to do anything. If you use any acceptable yardstick to measure Yar’Adua’s performance, you will come to the sad conclusion that he has failed. It is easy to judge Yar’Adua. Take a look at all the social and economic infrastructure of the nation and you can provide an answer for yourself. Sadly, corruption is on the increase, with looters defining the direction for him (Yar’Adua) and his government. Also, there is deceit in governance. For example, look at the way he has betrayed ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) after all the promises. Well, for us who know him, he is behaving true to type!
I think his (Yar’Adua) style of leadership is not known to scholarship, literature and common sense. This is because, I don’t know any leadership that is based on illegality, illegitimacy, lies, deceit, patronage and rhetorics while the mass of the people are in a miserable state. His leadership is complicated with favouritism based on (one’s) political contribution to his campaign. Remember that his sponsors used money and violence to put him in office and nearly all of them are compensated based on the amount of money they gave or the superiority of their violence at the polls. When he increased the salaries of the Police, I was not surprised given his ugly romance with security operatives and traditional rulers–one good turn deserves another! The things he must put right to put his government on course are known to us all! But the Yar’Adua I know lacks the courage, perseverance and determination to confront nagging national issues. By his nature, Yar’Adua is not proactive! Nigeria needs a bold, resolute, firm and conscious leader who can look at the masses with compassion and ignore the selfish establishment. I refer you to Governor Babatunde Fashola (of Lagos State) who has proved himself in two years. He has my vote any time he wants to be Nigeria’s president. Umar Musa Yar’Adua can not cure Nigeria of its ills because those milking Nigeria brought him to power. Hence, his allegiance is to them and not the Nigerian people. This is the bitter truth and no re-branding will work when those in government preaching the re-branding are the ones in need of re-branding. How do you give what you don’t have and need? Finally, remember that Yar’Adua (my elder brother, my brother in-law and teacher) is pre-occupied with two major things: first is his health; second is his political survival. I pray to Almighty God to enhance his health. However, I don’t think he can survive politically since he can not arrest looters like Olusegun Obasanjo and co.

22 June 2009 19:43The situation PDP President Umaru Musa Yar’dua found himself is exactly the corner he lumbed himself into knowingly hence,Nigerians must not pity or symphatise with himself as he is an outright total failure. He wanted power at all cost even though when he knew his health condition that he claims to have been dealing with over thirty five years now.But he corruptly accepted stolen mandate and gotten into power unable to perform competently as the position requires. If Umaru Yar’dua is a decent Nigerian he would have voluntarily resign by now and call for or allow presidentail re-run as the Nigerian suppreme court judgement about the presidential election petition was 50% to 50% not winner no loser scenerio.Let him force himself on Nigerians without the know-how or competency and viability to do the job Nigerians require their president to do.Umaru Musa Yar’dua is very greedy a man and corrupt indeed! 23 June 2009 21:22I will not go that far. The problem with President Yar’Adua is the way he was hoisted on Nigeria. Any way he still has two more years. His biggest obstacles are the people around him. The corrupt and indicted ex governors, who have been boasting that they back roled the President’s election or rather selection. These corrupt ex governors are blackmailing him. These corrupt ex governors have planted their people, in very sensitive positions around the President. You see these ex governors, in all public functions and in the corridor of power. They are now claiming that, it is only they that can return the President for a second time. These ex governors are getting away with murder. They will remove any body or ask the President to remove any body on their way. They have the ear of the AGF, because they put him there. They control the EFCC. The truth is that, they have very inflated ideas of themselves, but the President do not know this. The President should distance himself from these criminals, if he wants to make a success of his remaining two years in office. The President should remember that Nigerians, gave him a benefit of doubt, when he was forced on us, not because of the corrupt and indicted ex governors, but because of who he is. People saw he performed well, as governor of Kastina state, compared with most of his fellow governors who looted their treasuries with reckless abandon. People took account of his family and the good name they made when they served Nigeria. Especially the President’s father who served this great nation with pride, decency and honour. Also his senior brother who also served this nation with pride, honour, decency, a great man who wants the best for Nigeria and who at the end of the day sacrificed his life for Nigeria and democracy. These are the reasons why Nigerians gave the President a benefit of doubt. If it was another person amongst the other contestants that was forced on Nigeria other than Yar’Adua Nigeria could have imploded. This is what the President should have in mind. President Yar’Adua can still make his tenure very successful, if he can have the courage to distance himself from those cancar worms, the corrupt and indicted ex governors, their agents and cronnies.

25 June 2009 21:55Yar`Adua`s biggest problem is his almost complete lack of self confidence and assertiveness. These weaknesses have been seized upon by the crafty and manipulative architect of the modern day corruption in Nigeria, the former dictator, Ibrahim Babangida. This selfish and shameless megalomaniac is the hidden hand directing Yar`Adua`s regime.Babangida is responsible for Yar`Adua`s apparent confusion and subtafuse, with the believe that some stupid and corrupt Nigerians would clamour for him come back.He deceived Obasanjo to impose Yar`Adua on us, knowing that he could easily manipulate Yar`Adua`s deference to him.The one person Babangida is afraid of to rule Nigeria is Buhari. He knows that Buhari would probe him and would have real zero tolerance for corruption.Babangida is the force behind the attempt to scuttle the war on corruption. He runs around everywhere, weddings, funerals, etc, but this chief looter has never made a public statement against corruption, which is understandable because a monkey would find it extremely unplatable to say anything against banning the stealing of bananas!!!. Most of the most corrupt ex-govs, Orji Kalu, Ibori, etc, are his “boys”.As long as Babangida continues to play the hidden hand behind Yar`Adua`s gov`t, we might as well kiss the war on corruption and Nigeria`s progress goodbye!!!!

3 July 2009 23:46MR. PRESIDENT YOU ARE NOT LISTENING. YOU SHOULD USE NIGER DELTA MONEY TO DEVELOPE THE NIGER DELTA IMMEDIATELY. ABUJA AND ENVIRONS WERE RAPIDLY DEVELOPED WITH THE MONEY FROM THE NIGER DELTA. THE SAME INTEREST AND SPEED THAT WAS USED TO DEVELOPE ABUJA SHOULD BE USED TO DEVELOPE THE NIGER DELTA. THIS WILL BE A WIN WIN FOR NIGERIA. THE CRISES WILL STOP, INVESTMENTS WILL RUSH IN, THE YOUTHS WILL BE GAINFULLY EMPLOYED, NIGERIA WILL MAXIMISE HER CRUDE OIL AND GAS PRODUCTIONS,TOURISM WILL FLORISH, NIGERIAN INTELLECTUALS AND BUSINESS PEOPLE ABROAD WILL COME BACK TO NIGERIA AND CREATE A LOT OF JOBS. AS LITTLE AS 100,000.00 (ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND) POUNDS COULD ESTABLISH A SMALL COTTAGE INDUSTRY OF A SMALL FARM AND ABOUT SIX WELL PAID JOBS CAN BE CREATED. BY SIMPLE CALCULATION, ABOUT ONE MILLION NIGERIANS ABROAD CAN RAISE THIS TYPE OF MONEY. THAT IS ABOUT SIX MILLION NEW JOBS. MR. PRESIDENT LISTEN! LISTEN!! LISTEN!!! LISTEN!!!. TIME IS NOT ON OUR SIDE AND YOUR SIDE MAKE HASTE NOW!!!!!
