Oceanic Bank Group rolls out the drums in celebration of God’s blessing of its activities in the outgoing year
By Blessing Ogunli
For over two hours on Tuesday 2 December, the management and staff of Oceanic Bank Group abandoned the business of offering financial services to its customers to hold the group’s Annual Thanksgiving Service and Dinner, at the Shell Hall, Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos.
To celebrate with them were eminent personalities. They included former Head of State and chairman, Nigeria Prays, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), who chaired the occasion; Revd. George Adegboye, Chief Ade Ojo, Chairman, Toyota Nigeria Limited; Mrs Stella Okoli, Managing Director, Emzor Pharmaceutical Company; Apostle Hayfold Alile, Chairman, Oceanic Bank International plc and Gen. Mohammad, Managing Director, Post Service Homes Limited.
Also in attendance were representatives of the bank from across the country, some of its directors, shareholders, customers and friends.
The event started with a rendition of gospel songs in English and traditional languages by Oceanic Voices, a collection of staff of the bank. The Lagos City Orchestra also thrilled the audience with classical music.
In his speech, Gowon affirmed that the event afforded the bank the opportunity to thank God for all He has done for them in the past one year and also to implore Him to continue to bless the bank and all its customers as they progress into the coming year and beyond. He said he was delighted and impressed that the bank did not pretend to rely solely on its ability but also put its trust and belief in the power of God to help it do what is right at all times.
The former head of state praised the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the bank, Dr. (Mrs.) Cecilia Ibru for her foresight in initiating the programme, saying that the event will go a long way in establishing the place of God in the corporate governance of the bank.
Delivering the message at the service, Reverend George Adegboye, the guest minister, speaking on the topic: The Most Honourable Thing, said that many people fail to show appreciation to God and man when they receive privileges and still go ahead to ask for more.
Explaining that there is nothing wrong in asking for more, Rev Adegboye said that everything is wrong in asking for more when we fail to do those things we ought to do before we ask for more.
He called on the audience to cultivate the attitude of not only thanking God for what He has done but also for those things He is yet to do in their lives.
Dr. Cecilia Ibru, in her speech explained that the event was initiated as a way of bringing together staff and customers to thank God for the end of another successful year. Explaining that God is the strength of the bank, she said the story of Oceanic Bank is that of an organisation that asked the Lord to take charge of its affairs and today the bank is happy for that decision.
“The more you thank God, the more you task Him to do more for you,” Dr. Ibru stated.
She said that the thanksgiving was not organised out of the blues but was part of a tradition in the bank where devotion is done every morning before the commencement of the day’s business.
