The Quest Begins

The quest for Nigeria’s big band begins as Nigerian Breweries offers eye-popping prizes for potential winners of the 2010 edition of Star Quest

By Alex Akinyele

The organisers of the quest for Nigeria’s big band have set the ball rolling for this year’s contest. The question on the lips of most Nigerians who have been following the musical talent contest since 2002 when the musical contest debuted is: “who succeeds Pulse, the band made up of six talented youngsters: Dubem Ochokwu, band leader; Obianuju Udeh; Babatunde Omommeji; Moses Philips; Charles Nkamiang and Asuquo Okon, the winner of the 2009 edition?”

This question will be answered soon as Nigerian Breweries Plc, through Yussuf Ageni, Corporate Affairs Adviser, on 19 January unfolded plans to make the show  grand.

Ageni disclosed that Star Quest 2010 will offer an unprecedented package with the potential to change the lives of members of the group that wins the contest. “Unlike the previous edition, NB Plc has earmarked, apart from the N3.6m cash prize and a mini-van, a whopping N7.5m as recording contract for the winners of this edition,” he said, adding that the package also includes provision of one-year accommodation in a choice area in Lagos for the winning group as well as an opportunity to be part of the upcoming 2010 Star-sponsored concerts like Star Trek and Star Mega Jamz, as performing artistes.

Information available to TheNEWS says entry for the competition is free and open to budding musicians between the ages of 21 and 30. To qualify, applicants must possess demonstrable proficiency in at least one vital area of music - instrumentation, vocals or song writing. However, unlike previous editions and as with last year’s, online registration is not required for participation. Ageni urged applicants to log on to www.star-nigeria.com for more information on requirements.

This medium gathered that 36 finalists will be drawn from six pan-Nigeria zones and assembled at Star Fame Land, for a period of four weeks. During this period, the contestants will interact, and bond with one another. From those in camp, six brands will emerge, made up of individuals with different musical skills. It will be expected of these six bands to create and produce their own original music on which basis they will be evaluated by the viewing public. The bands will contest against one another, while the winning group would emerge through elimination process that will be decided by public voting via SMS. The elimination process will produce three bands that will then move on to the national final. The grand finale will be broadcast on national television on 3 April, when the winning band will also be decided by 100 per cent public voting, live, via SMS.

The Star Quest debuted in 2002 and featured participants from across the country, competing for the cash prize of N1 million and a one-year recording contract worth 2 million. Since then the success and excitement of Star Quest has brought about the emergence of both internationally recognised and upcoming talents; KC Presh, D’Accord, D’ Jewels, Diamonds and last year’s winner, Pulse.

Pulse has not only released a hit single, but has also done a collabo with Busta Rhymes. The winner of this year’s edition is expected to enjoy these privileges and more.
