Despite not confirming whether or not he will run in the 2001 elections Governor Danbaba Suntai is about to be drafted into the race for the Taraba Government House.
By Ben Adaji
Last May 2009 during an interactive session with journalists to mark his two years in office as Governor of Taraba State, Pharmacist Danbaba Danfulani Suntai announced that he was yet to be convinced that he had performed creditably well within his two years in office to warrant him contesting for a second term as Governor.
But this statement was misconstrued by many to mean that the governor admitted that he had not performed well in two years. Understandably, what Suntai was trying to put across was that he believes whatever achievements he had recorded within the life span of his administration should be left to God and the people to judge. Last week, Peoples Democratic Party top notchers from the southern senatorial zone of the state were quick to react to governor Suntai’s statement. Politicians from the zone which comprises Donga, Wukari, Ussa and Takum local government areas organised a rally at Wukari on 13 June and unanimously adopted governor Suntai as consensus candidate for the state come 2011 governorship elections.
In what appeared like parliamentary proceedings, a former senator, Senator U.J. Yohanna as he is fondly called moved a motion for the adoption of Governor Suntai as a consensus candidate for the zone. The motion was seconded by the immediate past deputy governor of the state, Alhaji Armaya’u Abubakar.Barrrister Baba Adi, a former governorship aspirant from the zone who doubles as chairman of the forum and speaker of the mock parliamentary session, threw the question to the unprecedented crowd who all answered “I” in affirmative, thereby endorsing Suntai as the sole candidate for 2011 governorship candidate for the state. Every speaker at the rally sang praises of governor Suntai for his leadership qualities. Among the first to speak were, Ambassador Danjuma Idris Waziri, former minister of commerce and governorship aspirant in the 2007 general elections, who said he was warming up for 2011, but having witnessed achievements recorded by Governor Suntai within two years in office he had no choice than to support Suntai so that he can continue with his good work for the state.
Ambassador Waziri described governor Suntai as an epitome of hardwork, sincerity and good governance who would not compromise integrity and hardwork for the promotion of personal ambition. He said apart from executing people-oriented projects scattered across the nooks and crannies of the state, Suntai had united all sections of the hitherto divided state. Also, Mr. Obadiah Ando, a former governorship aspirant in the state, said he too was compelled to put aside his ambition to run for the governorship of the state come 2011 because of the solid achievements recorded by Suntai within two years in office. Ando charged well meaning people of the state to support Suntai’s second term to enable him complete the good work he had started for the state. The chairman of the summit, Barrister Baba Adi in his speech recounted the experience of Taraba people in the past 10 years, which he described as the dark days of the state. He expressed satisfaction with aggressive transformation of the state embarked upon by the Suntai administration.
Adi was particularly happy with peace and security being experienced in the state, the sanity in governance and numerous steps being taken to develop various sectors in the state. He declared that Suntai will get a second term to accomplish his mission. Those who spoke at the summit include General A.T. Ibrahim, Air Commodore Ibrahim Kefas (retd). Former deputy governors, Alhaji Sale Danboyi and Alhaji Armayau Abubakar, former minister, Mrs Salome Audu Jankada as well as Hon. Emmanuel Bwacha former member of House of Representatives. They all gave Suntai the all clear to continue. Also present at the occasion were the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Barrister Istifanus Haruna Gbana, Hon. Isiaka Bawa and Hon. Sam Tsokwa of the House of Representatives from the zone and top PDP stalwarts from the zone. The rally which was attended by an unprecedented crowd from even other political parties witnessed the display of banners with different messages calling on Governor Suntai to continue in 2011. TheNEWS reliably gathered that PDP stalwarts from both Central and Northern senatorial zones in the state were already planning similar summit to endorse Governor Danbaba Suntai as consensus candidate for PDP come 2011. However, the questions on the lips of observers of the whole scenario is: Will Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai heed these calls? Only time will tell.
